Woman in Hip Hop Event Highlights

Women added a new and necessary dimension to hip-hop culture from the beginning. This evening celebrates the historic influence of women in hip-hop as we examine the crucial ways women contributed to hip-hop’s visual culture, style and sound.

As part of the Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious exhibition this panel feature insights from legendary photographer Janette Beckman, Academy Award nominated & Emmy-winning producer and director Lisa Cortes (former president of Def Jam Records), designer/entrepreneur April Walker (founder of Walker Wear) and one of the founding mothers of Hip-Hop, MC Debbie D. Moderated by author and journalist Vikki Tobak.

Fotografiska Opening Night Highlights

Internationally renowned photography museum, Fotografiska, award-winning entertainment company Mass Appeal, Chase Marriott Bonvoy credit cards, and Sony Music Entertainment’s (SME) Certified celebrated the opening of Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious, a new photography exhibition documenting the 50-year evolution of one of the most influential cultural movements of our generation: hip-hop.

A live performance by Grammy Award-winning legend NAS kicked-off the evening, followed by DJ sets by J. PERIOD and Statik Selektah who kept the beat going all night long. Mayor Eric Adams, Michael Che, A-Trak, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Nia Long, Fabolous, Dave East, among others were in attendance, reveling in the music, art, and energy that shaped the global phenomenon of hip-hop.
